The Photos Photiades Foundation recently celebrated the Cyprus Museum of Natural History’s 30th anniversary with a special festival on the premises of Photos Photiades Breweries, welcoming more than 2,000 visitors. Under the inspiration “NATURE • KNOWLEDGE • EXPLORATION”, the event invited visitors of all ages to discover Cyprus’s natural heritage through a programme of creative activities, play and hands-on learning.
The festival explored nature from a variety of perspectives, bringing learning to life for the whole family. Children had the opportunity to discover Cyprus’s biodiversity, examine microorganisms, fossils and archaeological finds, explore the water cycle, and learn about protecting endangered species and natural ecosystems. Art workshops using clay, natural pigments, printmaking techniques and recyclable materials connected observation of the natural environment with imagination and creative expression. The activities encouraged active participation, critical thinking, collaboration and a meaningful connection with nature, demonstrating how hands-on experiences can help develop environmental awareness.
Modern technology played a prominent role in the festival as a tool for exploring and understanding the natural and cultural environment. Through virtual reality (VR), visitors explored modern shipwrecks and underwater landscapes, while digital applications, satellite imagery, QR codes and 3D digital models made underwater archaeology, archaeological sites and Earth observation more accessible to the public. Interactive games and educational applications also helped children explore topics such as climate change, air quality and ecosystem protection. By bringing together science, technology, art and environmental education, the festival demonstrated accessible and engaging ways to share knowledge, participants to be actively involved in the process of discovery.
For the Photos Photiades Charitable, Scientific and Cultural Foundation, the Cyprus Museum of Natural History’s 30th anniversary marks an important milestone in its longstanding contribution to knowledge, education and society. The anniversary festival confirmed the importance of creating experiences that inspire children to ask questions, seek answers and discover the world around them. Investing in the knowledge and environmental awareness of younger generations is an investment in a future with greater respect for nature and our island’s precious heritage.
